Project Description

Marshmallow Catapult Challenge

Marshmallow Catapult Challenge

Charlotte Bennett, a student digital leader from the English DLaB team, recently took part in a STEAM Big Bang 2018 event with the University of Northampton at Silverstone Race Circuit.

She carried out a marshmallow catapult challenge which was very popular. The children in groups constructed a small catapult using marshmallows and then tried to fire the marshmallows from the catapult into the bucket.

It relates to engineering by constructing the catapult and maths looking at shapes and measurements. It could also relate to science by carrying out comparative tests and art by looking at the aesthetics of the catapult.

To include technology, ‘Pic Collage’ could be used to take photographs of the catapults and combined with video as an eBook using ‘Book Creator’.

Charlotte is going to be running this activity again at the Girlguiding Anglia Ready 4 Take Off STEM event on the 17th March 2018 where there will be 500 leaders trying out a range of STEM activities including the marshmallow catapult challenge.
